Be good guys.
Even though I don't like reproducing war scenes, what particularly intrigues me are human events and their interactions. Sometimes inspiration comes from an image, an idea or, as in this case, a story. I was at the presentation of the book entitled "Going for the Gothic Line", by Prof. Andrea Santangelo and this painting is inspired by the Second World War and the place where the story takes place is the village of Gemmano located on a 400 meter hill in the Rimini area, strategic point to maintain the position for the German 100th regiment. Here the allies found determined resistance, but after several attempts, when they managed to enter the town and fight house to house, an event occurred that is still remembered today. From what remained of a house a small door opened and although there was still fighting, an old lady came out, probably driven by hunger and tired of being locked up in the cellar. To the amazement of the German and English soldiers at that unusual presence, they stopped fighting and she, advancing with the utmost naturalness and with a heavy step, said in Romagna dialect "Be good guys, you're hurting yourselves!" Well, I couldn't resist this original and curious anecdote, with a short but significant dialogue, among other things in the Romagna dialect which I hadn't yet dared to write.
